Gymnast Kate cycles coast to coast

24/11/2009

Tynedale Gymnastics Club Squad member Kate Rogers aged just 10, has cycled the gruelling coast to coast route from Bowness-on-Solway to Tynemouth along the Hadrian’s Cycleway to raise £600 in sponsorship for new equipment at the club. Completing the journey in just two and a half days, Kate even found time to stop in Prudhoe Westworld to attend her gymnastics class on the way! The gymnastics Club has over 500 members in total who will benefit from new equipment thanks to Kate’s fundraising efforts.

Kate said, “It was good weather and easier than I expected. Climbing the big hill out of Greenhead was the worst moment. Once I got past Vindolanda it was all downhill, following the Tyne to the coast”.

The money will be used to buy new equipment for North Country Leisure’s two gymnastic venues at Prudhoe Westworld and Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham. Head Coach of the Gymnastics Clubs Gayle Crowell said “This is a wonderful achievement by Kate. We are all very grateful to her. All of the gymnasts will benefit from the new state of the art equipment.”

Kate now has the cycling bug and wants to attempt the 200 mile ride from Edinburgh to Tynemouth in spring next year!
