Local Children Bowled over on Cleator Moor
28/04/2009
Local school children have been trying their hand at indoor bowls and other sports at Copeland Bowls & Sports Centre, thanks to an arrangement with School Sports
Co-ordinator Alison Lister.
Year 5 and 6 pupils from Montreal, Frizington, Arlecdon, Lamplugh and Ennerdale primary schools have been spending 45 minutes on the synthetic outdoor pitch where they have been taking part in a variety of games and activities, followed by 45 minutes on the indoor bowling green. Centre staff have been on hand to take the children through the game and new target mats have been purchased to add an extra element to the sessions.
The school sessions at Copeland Bowls & Sports Centre, managed by North Country Leisure Copeland, have been running for six-week periods and will hopefully continue from September when the new term and bowling season resumes.
Along with providing fun activity for the children, the sessions at the Centre have been a great way of introducing a new sport to the youngsters. It is hoped that many will return out of school hours with their families and friends to enjoy a game of bowls, football or hockey with the local club Western Lakes Hockey that trains on the pitch on Saturday mornings.
Alison Lister says, “I have been impressed with the facility and how the staff have worked with the pupils who have been keen to learn the techniques and rules of the game. Hopefully it will encourage them to use it with their wider friends and family.”
Centre Manager Alan Burns says, “This is a great way for local children to come down to the centre and see what’s on offer. They get the chance to run around outside and take part in some fun games and have a go at an activity that the majority of them haven’t tried before.”
