Lynsey's Plans to get Cleator Fitter

09/04/2009

Cleator Moor is welcoming the arrival of new Community Physical Activity Coach, Lynsey Smith. The post has been funded by Sport England, in conjunction with North Country Leisure Copeland, the charity which runs several centres in and around Copeland.
Despite the long job title, Lynsey’s aim is really quite simple; to get the residents of Cleator Moor up and about and enjoying the benefits of being more active.

Lynsey, who is passionate about health and fitness, is qualified in physical education and used to run a fitness gym in the area. She says, “This project is not just about sport; it’s about using physical activity to gain substantial rewards and bring people together. It’s remarkable how quickly you feel better, both mentally and physically when you start being active. It dramatically improves wellbeing, confidence and self esteem, as well as being a great way to meet people and make friends.”

Scientific evidence shows that physical activity doesn’t have to be strenuous to achieve health benefits and Lynsey will be providing gentle, low impact activities for those new to exercise. Dance, gym and simple aerobics sessions will be taken by Lynsey at local venues, along with walks in and around the area. The activities are open to all, although Lynsey will be encouraging young women and girls to take part, particularly young mothers and those out of work.

Starting a new activity can be daunting but Lynsey will be there every step of the way to help individuals get started, stay motivated and set their own personal goals. Above all, she is keen to hear what activities local residents would like to see on offer in the area. If you would like to speak to Lynsey with any ideas or for details of what’s available, she can be contacted at Copeland Bowls & Sports Centre on: 01946 815100 or by email at: lynsey.smith@northcountryleisure.org.uk.
