New leisure developments open in Alnwick and Coquetdale

September is going to be an exciting month for leisure in Alnwick and Coquetdale, with the opening of two new developments, which will vastly increase the amount of fitness options available in the area. Funded by Alnwick District Council, work has recently been completed on a £510,000 extension to the existing Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre as well as a £255,000 building extension to Coquetdale Swimming and Fitness Centre (previously Rothbury Swimming Pool) at Dr Thomlinson Middle School. £50,000 of additional funding for equipment was contributed by local charitable company North Country Leisure Alnwick. The centre in Rothbury is run in partnership with the Dr Thomlinson Trust and NCL Alnwick who manage both centres.
The new facilities will be open to the public from the 8th September, with the new studio space at Willowburn providing a fitness suite that can be used for dance, aerobics and martial arts classes, with over 30 new fitness classes taking place every week. It will also be available for hire to local community groups as a meetings and conference facility.
The new development at Rothbury consists of a fitness gym suitable for all ages and abilities, containing over 20 pieces of brand new cardiovascular and resistance equipment. The project was managed in partnership with Dr Thomlinson Trust, Alnwick District Council, NCL Alnwick and Northumberland County Council.
Councillor Ian Hinson, Leader of Alnwick District Council said, “ Only a few years ago, Alnwick District Council started out on an ambitious path to transform the provision of sport and leisure facilities in the district and our partnership with North Country Leisure has been instrumental in the success of this work.
The opening of new facilities in Alnwick and Rothbury mark another welcome addition to the district’s sporting amenities and I hope the local community will get many years of enjoyment from them.”
Chris Horner, Chairman of NCL Alnwick said, “The extension to facilities at Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre and Coquetdale Swimming and Fitness Centre will be valuable additions to NCL Alnwick’s sport and leisure provision. We are certain that customers of all ages will benefit from the investment for many years to come.”
