Exciting Leisure Developments Begin in Rothbury
02/04/2008
Thanks to funding from Alnwick District Council, work is progressing on a £255,000 building extension to Rothbury Swimming Pool at Dr Thomlinson Middle School. The swimming pool is run in partnership with the Dr Thomlinson Trust and local charitable company North Country Leisure Alnwick, who manages the centre.
Rothbury Swimming Pool site will be renamed to ‘Coquetdale Swimming & Fitness Centre’ and the new Healthy Living Centre extension to the existing pool will consist of a fitness gym suitable for all ages and abilities. Separate entrances will be provided for the school and the centre. The project is being managed in partnership with Dr Thomlinson Trust, Alnwick District Council, North Country Leisure Alnwick and Northumberland County Council.
The fitness extension has been high on a list of leisure priorities. With Alnwick District Council agreeing to finance the cost of the extension the building work begins soon, with completion in summer 2008.
Councillor Roger Styring, Leader of Alnwick District Council said that it was one of the council's key priorities to support the provision of sports and leisure facilities across the district, " The council has committed £765,000 of funding to support this scheme and a further extension at Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre giving them the green light to start development.
" Both leisure extensions have been well thought through, meet a community need and will be of great benefit, and well used, by local residents. "
Chris Horner, Chairman of North Country Leisure Alnwick said, “The extension to facilities at Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre and Rothbury Swimming Pool will be a valuable addition to North Country Leisure Alnwick’s sport and leisure provision. We are certain that customers of all ages will benefit from the investment for many years to come.”
“It will encourage more people to run, swim or whatever they wish to keep fit and healthy.
We will continue to provide a wide range of sports and leisure facilities for the people of the Alnwick and Rothbury areas.”
